Zero waste is an idea of waste management and a set of principles focused on waste prevention.

It can be understood as a lifestyle, ethical and economic goal that involves generating as little waste as possible and thus not polluting the environment with one's consumer choices. And also as an approach to creating a circular economy.

The definition adopted by the Zero Waste International Alliance[1] is:

Zero Waste: The conservation of all resources by means of responsible production, consumption, reuse, and recovery of all products, packaging, and materials, without burning them and without discharges to land, water, or air that threaten the environment or human health.

In the Zero Waste living model, it is essential to apply the principles of the 5Rs[2]:

  • refuse,
  • reduce,
  • reuse,
  • recycle,
  • rot.
