A cryptocurrency is a digital currency used for payments made over a computer network. Cryptocurrencies, unlike traditional currencies, are not subject to central control, such as a government or bank. The recording of transactions and the creation of more cryptocurrency units takes place on a decentralized network controlled equally by all its users.

The first cryptocurrency in the world was Bitcoin, created in 2009. Ethereum is currently mentioned among the most popular cryptocurrencies. However, the number of available cryptocurrencies is counted in thousands (an estimate from March 2022 says about 18,000 cryptocurrencies).
