QU.A.L.ITY is a set of principles for independent verification of carbon dioxide removal and criteria for recognition of certification schemes that can be used to demonstrate compliance of sequestration projects with European Union criteria.

The European Commission's proposed certification of carbon dioxide removal could also create new business opportunities for farmers, foresters, or land managers.

The four QU.A.L.ITY criteria proposed in the regulation are:

  • Quantification: Carbon dioxide removal activities must be accurately measured and have clear climate benefits;
  • Additionality: Carbon dioxide removal activities must go beyond already existing practices and legal requirements;
  • Long-term storage: Certificates are tied to the duration of carbon storage to ensure sustainable storage;
  • Sustainability: Carbon dioxide removal activities must protect or contribute to sustainable development goals, such as climate change adaptation, a circular economy, water and marine resources, and biodiversity.

The regulatory framework proposed by the European Union is intended to support the removal of CO2 from the atmosphere through technologies or natural carbon sinks and to guarantee their quality and comparability.
