A term used to describe biodiversity or the variety of species of living organisms found in an ecosystem.

The greater the biodiversity of an ecosystem, the greater its resilience to changing conditions and chances for survival. With the development of the economy and the expansion of human activities, we have been observing a drastic decline in biodiversity worldwide for several decades, manifesting in a decreasing number of animal, insect, and plant species. The loss of biodiversity threatens both the environment and humans, resulting in, among others, lower crop yields, limited food production capacity and desertification. Climate change also contributes to the decline in biodiversity.
