A cycle of biogeochemical processes in which carbon molecules transform and travel through the environment. One such process is, for example, the incorporation of carbon dioxide into plant structures as part of photosynthesis and its re-excretion into the atmosphere through oxygen exchange (respiration, perspiration), decay of dead organisms, or burning of fossil fuels.

Much of the carbon present in nature is stored in rocks and sediments. The remainder is found in the oceans, atmosphere, and living organisms.
