The Sustainable Development Goals

The Sustainable Development Goals are contained in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development [1] adopted by 193 UN member states by a 2015 General Assembly Resolution in New York.

The Agenda sets 17 goals and 169 related tasks to be achieved by 2030. It is divided into 5 areas - the so-called 5xP, or People, Planet, Prosperity, Peace, and Partnership.

The Sustainable Development Goals replaced the UN Millennium Development Goals, which were to be achieved by 2015.

Among the key challenges of the goals are poverty, hunger, health, education, gender equality, climate change, peace, sustainable development, and climate justice. The implementation of the Goals and related tasks is monitored around the world by institutions designated to do so.

The individual Goals are:

Goal 1. No poverty
Goal 2. Zero hunger
Goal 3. Good health and wellbeing
Goal 4. Quality education
Goal 5. Gender equality
Goal 6. Clean water and sanitation
Goal 7. Affordable and cleaning energy
Goal 8. Decent work and economic growth
Goal 9. Industry, innovation and infrastructure
Goal 10. Reduced inequalities
Goal 11. Sustainable cities and communities
Goal 12. Responsible consumption and production
Goal 13. Climate action
Goal 14. Life below water
Goal 15. Life on land
Goal 16. Peace, justice and strong institutions
Goal 17. Partnerships for the goals
