Green Claims Directive
From TerGoPedia
Green Claims Directive proposes new criteria to stop companies in the European Union from making misleading claims about the environmental merits of their products and services.
The proposal aims to formulate new rules to combat greenwashing and tighten the rules for introducing new environmental labels.
Main features of the directive:
- the obligation to comply with standards on how eco-claims are substantiated and how they are communicated;
- all green claims, before they are used in communications, will have to be independently verified and supported by scientific evidence;
- to control the proliferation of eco-labels that may mislead consumers, any new labels will have to be held at EU levels;
- introduces penalties for non-compliance, which will be enforced by national authorities, who are obliged to inspect companies.
